If you’re looking to save money on some of those big ticket necessities at the grocery store look no further! It’s no secret that many people are finding DIY ways to save money around the house, and one of the newest ways families are saving is by making their own laundry detergent and dishwashing soap. It’s a very simple process!
Laundry Detergent Ingredients:
One box of 20 Mule Team Borax
One box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (Not baking soda)
1 Fels-Naptha Soap bar
Cheese grater
Large bowl and spoon for mixing
Tupperware/locking lid jar for storage
All ingredients can be easily found here or at your local grocery store on the laundry aisle. We adapted this recipe from DIY Natural.
The instructions are extremely easy; simply start by grating your bar of soap with the cheese grater (or food processor if you prefer) into medium to fine shavings. Once you have finished the entire bar, place it in the large mixing bowl along with 1 cup of Borax and 1 cup of the washing soda.
Stir to mix thoroughly and store in an airtight container with a 1 Tbsp scoop for each load. You can always use up to 2-3 Tbsp for very soiled loads.
There are many others out there using the similar ingredients, I liked the ease of storage and small batch this recipe creates.
Now on to a great recipe for your own homemade dishwashing detergent!
We stuck with the idea of small scale and dry components for the dishwashing detergent to keep your DIY projects simple and mess free with this recipe from Wellness Mama. Also, the ingredients are things you still have left over from making your laundry detergent!
Dishwashing Detergent Ingredients:
2 parts Borax
2 parts Washing Soda
1 part Citric Acid (this can actually be found on the spice aisle of your local grocery store for canning tomatoes or online at NOW Foods)
1 part salt
You can make this in any amount you’d like – 1 cup of Borax to 1/2 cup of Citric Acid and so forth – to get the desired amount of soap to store for future use. Just like you would with the laundry detergent simply combine all ingredients well and store in an airtight container. You can also add essential oils to either of these recipes for a great scent to your dishes/laundry.
Now go out there and save some money with these great homemade, natural alternatives to that expensive chemical soap at the store! Try this out in your own home, let us know what you think and how your family saves!
