If you have kids then you’ve probably already seen Guardians of the Galaxy. Twice. The movie has become wildly popular since its release and has added a plethora of new superheros to your children’s list of favorites. One of our favorites – and the one who has seen a lot of publicity and toys is Groot. Have you seen the dancing Groot one man made to replicate the baby dancing scene? They are too cute, but since we prefer things a bit more on the edible side we found this fantastic recipe from JK Denim of Koalipops.
You will need the following:
Shortbread Cookie Dough – premade (Don’t fret – here’s a great recipe)
Groot stencil – which you can print out here
Small Paring Knife or Exacto Knife
Tube of Green icing with decorating tip
Store bought cupcakes (Or homemade!) in your favorite flavor
Light brown icing
Black icing
Brown food coloring
First, make your short bread cookie dough and use the brown food coloring to dye it a slightly darker color, more like Groot’s wooden body. And put the cupcakes in the oven to bake.
Roll out the shortbread dough and place your Groot stencil on top of it. Cut out as many Groot shapes as you have cupcakes. Create a bark lines on the body of the shape with the tip of a spoon or exacto knife, and press two small holes with your fingertips in his face for his eyes. Now cook the shortbread as though they were plain cookies until golden brown.
Pipe the green icing to look like grass all over the top of the cupcakes once they’re cool, and when your Groot cookies are ready, dab a dot of black icing in for the eyes and light brown in the bark crevices.
Cut a small slit at the top of your cupcake, pop little Groot in there and Voila! You now have what JK called a “farm of Groots”. We think these will be a hit with kids, especially for superhero themed parties. You could also send them to school unassembled with your child and look like a total baking rockstar when they show off what you made! No one needs to know how simple it is, really.
