There’s a major resurgence in the dance scene right now of classic swing dancing to jazz music. The most popular swing jazz dance to come out of the 1930s and early 40s is known as Lindy Hop and it’s still being danced regularly today by the Houston Swing Dance Society. They are an all volunteer-run organization devoted to preserving and promoting the variety of dances from the jazz era.
You can easily become a member of HSDS for only $40 for a whole year, which includes a membership card, discounts to classes and events, a monthly newsletter and a flat rate of only $20 for unlimited classes per month.
Classes are every Sunday night at the Eldorado Ballroom, just south of downtown Houston. They offer basics and variations, if you’re already familiar with the style, from 6 – 7pm. Intro to Lindy Hop is from 7 – 8pm, then everyone gets together for some practice dancing until 10pm.
They are holding a Harvest Moon Ball September 20th at the VFW in Spring Branch with special performances, contests, and a photographer on hand. You still have time to get some classes in to perfect your form before the big event, but if you plan on attending, be sure to buy your tickets early for $20, instead of $30 at the door.
Be sure to check out their website to become a member, sign up for classes or join events. This is a great way to get out of the house, learn a new skill and meet new people in your area.
