Sometimes it’s hard to find a sitter on short notice, and it can be even more difficult to enjoy yourself once you’re out with the baby on your mind. It’s important to leave your child at home when you’re both comfortable and ready, but remember it’s healthy to get time apart too. Here are some tips to keeping a cool head when faced with your first night out without the new little angel.

  1. Get a babysitter you trust. Ask your friends, neighbors, and co-workers who their favorite sitter is; reliable references are the best! This will make you feel more confident that you’re leaving your little one in experienced hands. For a wider range of options, babysitter sites with background checks like Care.com, can also provide you with babysitter options with references as well.
  2. Have all your little one’s supplies organized and ready to go so you don’t feel rushed when it’s time to leave for the evening. You’ll feel better knowing you’ve prepared of everything the sitter would need the night before. If you’re a two-car family, you can even set the car seat up and leave a diaper bag in your second car too in case there’s an emergency.
  3. Write important information down for the babysitter, such as what your baby’s preferred veggies are, their favorite stuffed animal–anything you think the sitter may need to know. Then you don’t have to worry that you’ve forgotten anything, it’s all down in the notes.
  4. Text messaging is a beautiful thing, and for this situation it’s perfect! You can text the sitter for an update without interrupting your night, or the baby’s.

It’s ok to feel stressed and nervous about your first few times out as a new mommy! The best thing you can do is be prepared, remain calm and most importantly, enjoy yourself!
