Do you have young children who are learning how to speak and spell? This rhyming scavenger hunt is a fun backyard game during the summer, and most of these items you’ll likely have at home.
Materials Needed:
-4 Hula Hoops
– A pack of plastic disposable plates
-Sharpie of any color
Take your sharpie and four plates, and write one word on the back of each plate, making sure the words are relatively easy to read and rhyme. You’ll place each of these plates in a hula hoop in the middle of the yard.
With your extra plates, make additional words that rhyme with your four hula hoop words. Then hide the plates around the yard for your children to find. Tell them to go out and find the words, and once they have found a plate run it over to the hula hoops and match it with the correct rhyming word. It’s a great way for them learn how to say, spell and rhyme all at the same time while running around!
A great way for your child to practice rhyming is to reading rhyming books! Here are some books you can check out at your public library or buy at your local bookstore: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Green Eggs and Ham, Dinosaur Roar, and Big Red Barn are some of our favorites. Enjoy and let us know how your children did!
