Egg Carton Color Sorting

Many of the activities that we do every day involve sorting colors. From coordinating an outfit to following traffic lights, knowing our colors is an important skill to have. Start building your child’s knowledge of color with the egg carton color sorter! Not only will they be able to identify colors by sight, but with this activity your child can also learn to recognize the colors’ written names. I found this gem on education.com.

What you will need:
· Paper egg carton (full or half-dozen)
· 6-12 different colors of markers or non-toxic paint
· Pen
· Small, similar colored objects such as beads, buttons, or marbles

Directions:
1. Cover the lid of the egg carton with white paint or plain paper.

2. Let your child mark a small spot on the plain lid, and have them write the color’s name above the spot.  See how many colors they can identify on their own in this step.

3.  Paint each little egg section a different color. Make sure these colors match the colors used on the lid of the carton.

4. Let the fun begin! Have your child sort the small colored objects into their respective egg holes. Interact with your child in this step.  Ask them to say the name of the color out loud when placing the trinket in the hole, and don’t forget to show them that the name of the color is written at the top of the egg carton.

For easy retrieval, store this game with the carton closed and the colored objects inside.  Now you and your child are ready for the next round of color sorting!
