I recently had time to catch up on some of my magazine subscriptions. Amongst them are, Juxtapoz magazine, Real Simple magazine, and HGTV magazine. There were two pages dedicated to benches on the HGTV magazine. Vern Yip, shared smart shopping and sizing tips for benches, and I learned a bunch! In fact I learned so much that I decided to do more research.
Here’s a brief list of the things I learned about benches; shopping for them and decorating with them!
1. Most benches are 18-20 inches tall
2. Get a bench 48 inches wide to seat two
3. There are many places where a bench can be placed around the home such as:
a. Bathroom: You can place a bench beside the bathtub for bathroom seating, or to hold and keep bathroom accessories.
b. Bedroom: Benches in the bedroom can serve as a place to sit while getting dressed, to place an ironed outfit, and to hold extra linens. You don’t want to go wrong with sizing, so find a bench that is four inches shorter than your bed to ensure that the bench is not too wide, this will avoid it looking awkward.
c. Entry Way: Using a bench in the entry way near the door can serve as a place to remove dirty shoes, which will help keep your home clean. It’s a win win situation!
d. Living Room: Create extra seating that can be rearranged in minutes with a bench in the living room. You can also use a bench near the window and have an instant window seat!
e. Kid’s Room: You can choose a colorful bench in kids’ rooms to serve as a parent-child reading seat or simply a place for their stuffed animals.
4. When shopping for a bench make sure it is sturdy
5. If considering a fabric covered bench choose a durable fabric. Yern Yip recommends micro-suede.
Benches seem to be one of the most versatile pieces of furniture. I hope that this was useful information to you while either shopping for a bench or decorating with one. There’s nothing better than feedback, so leave a comment!
