Perhaps you’ve heard that Home Depot offers free do-it-yourself workshops for adults, but did you know that they have kids’ workshops too? Stop by Home Depot in the morning on the first Saturday of the month and you’ll see a group of kids hammering away on their own personal projects!
I’ve been taking my kids to these workshops for years and it is still something they get excited about. All the projects are made out of wood and we’ve made toy versions of everything from fire trucks to planes to picture frames to birdhouses to sleds, and many more besides!
When the kids first arrive they are given a pre-packaged kit that includes the wood, nails, stickers (if applicable), and instructions. They pick up a hammer and glue from the buckets and find a place to work. The instructions are easy to follow, but depending on the age of your child you many need help out. The nail holes are all pre-drilled so there isn’t any question about where the nails should be placed and they go in easily.
After the kit is assembled the kids can go to the painting stations to personalize them. I always make sure my kids wear old clothes because they seem to like wearing the paint too! I also keep a piece of cardboard or a plastic bag in the back of the car to put the finished creations on during the ride home, because the paint is still wet.
Not only do the kids get to keep their projects, they also get a pin and sometimes a certificate to show they completed the workshop! The Home Depot we go to also has snacks and drinks for the kids because carpentry is hard work! Oh, and did I mention that this is all free???
The workshops take place at Home Depot from 9am until noon on the first Saturday of every month. Usually the workshops are held outside so dress appropriately. However, if the weather is especially cold or wet they may be moved into the store.

Thanks for posting this! I know they offer these but forget to schedule them in my planner. Sending the hubby with two of our girls while I’m with other one all day at chess tournament!
Glad we could help Jessica, thanks for sharing!
