The weather is getting warmer and summer break will soon be here. Everyone knows that Galveston is just a short drive away and great place for a quick beach getaway…. but did you know about these 5 things to do that don’t fill your car with sand?
1. Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum – Pier 19, Galveston, Texas
Housed in a retired jackup drilling rig, this museum has three floors of models and interactive displays that show the history of offshore oil and gas. Walk outside on the third floor skywalk and get a great view of the ships around Galveston!
2. Lone Star Flight Museum – 2002 Terminal Drive, Galveston, TX 77554
Right next to Moody Gardens, little aviators can walk through a hanger full of airplanes. Learn about the evolution of flight, history and the people behind it all.
3. Galveston Railroad Museum – 2602 Sante Fe Place, Galveston, Texas 77550
Little engineers can visit the train museum… or even take a ride on the The Harborside Express! Before you go, print out a scavenger hunt to make your tour even more fun.
4. La King’s Confectionery – 2323 The Strand, Galveston, Texas 77550
Visiting La King’s is like traveling back in time 100 years. This old fashioned confectionery has a working 1920’s soda fountain serving malts, shakes, ice cream sodas and sundaes. On weekends and during the summer, kids can see salt water taffy being made… and the candy maker tosses samples to everyone in the crowd!
5. Schlitterbahn Galveston – 2109 Lockheed Street, Galveston, Texas 77554
Visit during the summer or winter for outdoor or indoor waterpark fun! At Schlitterbahn, you can park for free, bring in your own picnic, and not worry about the sandy beach mess.
