A nursery is where your child will spend the first few years of their lives, so it is important that you put a lot of thought into how functional and safe the room will be. These following tips are just a few that you should consider when designing your child’s first room.
1. Avoid placing your child’s crib near windows or window cords, as it can be a safety hazard.
2. Inspect your child’s crib or bunk beds to make sure that they meet federal safety standards. Mattresses should fit closely to the crib’s side, and the spindles, rods, and corner posts of a crib should be no more than 2-3/8 inches apart. Also, make sure that the crib is not a “drop-side” crib, as these have proven to be dangerous for children.
3. You should make sure that any chests or cabinets in the room cannot tip over. They may require fastening to a wall or to the floor for security.
4. The hardware on all of your child’s furniture should be smooth and rounded. No sharp corners should be present on any handles or knobs in the room.
5. All electrical outlets should be safeguarded with plastic plugs.
6. Skid proof all of the flooring in your child’s room.
7. As your child gets older, if you choose to furnish their room with a bunk bed, make sure that the ladders, handrails, and safety rails are sturdy.
